August Salary Increment For Teachers. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Nakuru has restarted negotiations with the teachers unions KNUT, KUPPET, and KUSNET. Originally slated for last week, these discussions did not take place.
The Commission’s financial responsibilities to instructors in the form of loans and insurance premiums have already been satisfied. In order to facilitate the delivery of August pay and adjustments, it sought to finalise a deal with the unions on Tuesday.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) review negotiations for the years 2021 to 2025, however, were unsuccessful. The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) and the teachers’ unions had separately made salary recommendations, and TSC came up with a proposal that was less generous. This has had a negative impact on teachers’ life by causing major salary delays.
Due to paycheck delays, a lot of teachers working in isolated schools are having trouble paying for basic necessities like travel.
Additionally, several teachers wanted to re-enroll their kids in school but are unable to do so due to financial hardships brought on by the postponed payments.
According to reports, the Commission’s proposal to speed up the payment of August salaries—which would include an increase and arrears for July—will be taken into consideration by the teachers’ unions.
Since the payroll for August has already been completed, salaries for August can now be paid with retroactive July increments.
Following a mandate from President William Ruto, who emphasised the necessity for rapid resolution in the negotiations to facilitate the introduction of new payment structures, TSC is anxious to finalise the pay deal.
The government has provided funds to improve teachers’ remuneration packages, so President Ruto asked the TSC and union leaders to achieve an agreement quickly.
A day after the teachers’ unions rejected the suggested rises of 2.4% for higher job groups and 9.5% for lower job groups, claiming that the proposal fell short of even the President and SRC’s recommendations, President Ruto delivered his remarks.
The President praised educators for their commitment and proposed that those who helped kids prepare for festivals should receive scheduled promotions. He emphasised the government’s dedication to rewarding and elevating teachers in accordance with their effectiveness.
5,000 teachers will receive direct promotions this year, and 36,000 teachers will receive indirect promotions, according to Ruto. He informed them that their efforts were welcomed and appreciated while encouraging teachers to keep doing well.
As a component of bigger government initiatives in the creative sector, the arts, and education, Ruto also applauded the musical performances. He said that the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) had put to rest earlier arguments over the educational system and was now firmly in use.

In a another setting, Luanda MP Dick Maungu blasted the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for failing to advance teachers despite receiving 1.5 billion shillings in funding for the fiscal year 2022–2023. The MP, who sits on the National Assembly’s Education Committee, responded to teacher complaints that they had been in the same work groups for years.
Maungu also voiced worry over teachers serving in acting capacities for protracted periods of time without earning promotions during a Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) event in Emuhaya. He claimed that a new policy would be established by Parliament specifying how long a teacher may serve as a deputy in educational facilities.
Maungu declared that the Education Principal Secretary will appear before the Education Committee in September to give an explanation for why the Treasury had not yet given the capitation money to the schools.
