Mandatory TSC Refresher Courses. Each teacher will have to take a new training program next year.
The training will assist teachers in keeping up with changes in the curriculum if President William Ruto accepts the advisory committee’s suggestions.
When the report is presented to the President in the House of Representatives on August 1, 2023, the task force indicated that it is critical that all instructors receive new training on the curriculum adjustments.
It mentions, among other things, that “the Department of Education will develop guidelines on how all teachers graduating before 2023 will complete a year-long mandatory retooling and upgrading program to comply with the change.”
Institutions will now be required to develop extension programs for teaching staff before competency-based teacher training in order to undertake the retooling program.
The Working Committee also suggested that candidates for initial teacher training should earn a grade of C (single), which would boost the quantity and quality of new teachers entering the industry.
Other recommendations presented by the committee included an A (single), a special education degree, a technical teacher training degree, and a secondary school teacher training degree.
For programs leading to the Bachelor of Education degree, the University Senate will still choose the admission requirements.
The Teacher Service Commission will also provide all graduates with the chance to take part in a required, one-year internship program after pre-service training is finished.
