PSC Announces Job Vacancies In Four Public Universities. Seven job openings have been made public by the Public Service Commission (PSC) for four public universities around the nation.
Both Kaimosi Friends University and Maasai Mara have a single opening for the office of Vice-Chancellor.
In addition, Kaimosi Friends University is actively looking for a Deputy Vice-Chancellor to supervise duties related to administration, finances, and development.
Administration, finance, planning, and development, and academic, research, and student affairs are the two positions that deputy vice chancellors at Chuka University report to. A deputy vice chancellor is being sought by Kibabii University to support academics and student affairs.
The advertisement states that applications must be received by the Commission by August 28, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. (East African Time).
For additional information, interested candidates are advised to refer to the Commission’s website at www.publicservice.go.ke.
The advertisement appears despite the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms’ (PWPER) recommendation that the PSC stop participating in the selection of university chancellors and vice chancellors.
According to the reform proposal, this practice has caused problems with governance at Kenya’s public universities. The declaration indicates that the PSC’s involvement in selecting the top university administrators harms their autonomy and should be stopped.
In accordance with the reform, university councils should independently manage the selection and appointment of chancellors, college presidents, and deputy principals at public universities without consulting the PSC.
Instead, they favor letting university councils hire and select chancellors, college presidents, and deputy presidents in public universities without consulting the PSC.
The task panel suggests starting the 14-day hiring process for vice chancellors at least six months before the tenure of the current ones expires.
The committee also suggested requiring a Ph.D. and a distinguished public or private sector career for anyone applying for the position of university chancellor.
