TSC Announces Employment Of 20000 JSS Teachers. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) intends to hire at least 20,000 new teachers in order to alleviate the severe shortage of teachers in junior schools.
Nancy Macharia, the chief executive of TSC, acknowledged the major shortfall and stated that there is a severe teacher shortage in junior secondary schools. Currently, there are 56,928 teachers employed, compared to 99,045 needed.TSC news as of 2024.
Schools are battling with a shortage of teachers until July, when hiring is anticipated, as the first cohort of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) passes to Grade 8 and the second Junior Secondary School (JSS) class begins.
Dr. Macharia emphasized the government’s commitment to funding schools to progressively close the staffing gap. In the upcoming financial year, TSC has sought funds to hire an additional 20,000 teachers.

Currently, primary schools exhibit a surplus of 18,194 teachers, prompting a redistribution strategy to address understaffed schools and achieve the recommended teacher-learner ratio of 1:40.
Despite the surplus in primary schools, a shortage of 42,117 teachers looms at the junior secondary level, exacerbated by the introduction of Grade 8.
Concurrently, intern teachers, initially hired to handle this grade, have raised concerns about inadequate terms, poor working conditions, and being compelled to teach subjects outside their qualifications.
Their discontent, including accusations of unfulfilled promises for permanent positions and insufficient teaching materials, led some interns to consider withholding their services this month.
In a positive development for teachers, plans are in place to promote 36,505 educators to higher job grades. Primary school tutors will account for 17,514 promotions, while post-primary teachers will see 18,591 advancements.
