TSC Reveals New Salary Scale For JSS Teachers. The Teachers Service Commission has revealed the new salary scale for teachers who are and will be handling grade 7. The teachers in grade 7 are spearheading the new curriculum, the competency based curriculum.
Initially, there was much concern on the categories of teachers who were to handle grade 7 learners. Junior secondary is made of grade 7,8 and 9 while senior secondary is made of grade 10, 11 and 12.
After close consultation from across the divide, the Teachers service commission settled on the categories of teachers to handle grade 7 with their respective salary scale.The Teachers service commission has made it clear that quite a number of primary school teachers will be promoted to teach in junior secondary schools.
The teachers with higher academic qualifications are in line to be deployed to junior secondary schools.

Some have already been deployed at the beginning of this year and many more are set to be deployed. The teachers to be promoted with higher qualifications are those who have failed to be promoted by the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG).
Primary school teachers with diploma in education course will be deployed to junior secondary school. This is according to the Status Report on Teacher preparedness for competence based curriculum.
Some were deployed to junior secondary schools with slightly higher qualifications earlier this year.The commission has made it clear plans are underway to deploy more Primary School Teachers with diplomas to junior secondary school.
Initially, the commission had strictly opted to deploy only primary school teachers with degrees and above to junior secondary school.
This is the category that was deployed to junior secondary school. In addition, a minimum of C+ kcse grade was compulsory together with a C+ in the two teaching subjects.The teachers deployed to junior secondary school automatically start at job group C2 with a basic pay of 34,995 per month and a maximum of 43,694.
Upon completion of three years in service, they will be promoted to job group C3 under the CPG rules.
In addition, they will enjoy the following allowances
- Commuter allowance = ksh 5000
- House allowance = ksh. 7,500
- Annual leave allowance = ksh 6,000
- Teachers in hardship areas = ksh. 10,900
In job group C3, they will pocket 43,154 shillings and a maximum of 53,943 shillings.
